What forms of new media do you use daily?
When it comes to new media, I do not use many outlets. I have begun using my computer more now that I am back in school, but the most communicating I do online is through my classwork. I don't have a Twitter, Youtube, or Facebook account, although I have begun the process of making those accounts. I used to have an android phone, but I got rid of it because I didn't use it enough. By no means am I against any of these media outlets, but I haven't found a personal use for them until now. I do however read news on the internet, but it isn't through social media. I typically look for more solid resources, because anything can be posted on Facebook whether it is true or not.
How has new social media influenced
your perspective of events?
Major events in the world have a tendency to hit the online presses immediately, especially with the use of iPhone's and other gadgets. Almost anyone can be first on the scene if they have technology with social media access. I can honestly say that there have been a few times when I was taken aback by an event that was posted on Facebook. My wife likes to keep me updated since I don't use Facebook yet, so I guess that would be another way I am exposed to new media. I try not to take anything super seriously from a social media outlet until I verify the information through a more valid source. I don't think my event perspectives are influenced much, because I try to think like a journalist when reading about something. I try to keep an unbiased opinion of any story until I analyze and cross reference any pertinent information. I am glad however that we can spread information at such high volumes and speeds.
Are these positive or negative influences?
As with most other aspects of life, I tend to think that there are both positive and negative influences that originate with social media. On a positive note, the advanced speed is great for everyone. Students can turn complete entire degree programs without ever stepping foot in a classroom. Teachers can operate and balance several classes online, and utilize many social media outlets in the process. On a more personal note, many families and friends use social media to keep up with family gatherings and similar events. Families can also keep in touch over long distances, even internationally. Think of how many soldiers rely on technology and social media to communicate with their families back home. Ideas can be shared immediately and transactions can happen almost instantaneously. I also think there is a definite cultural influence, as we can be exposed to different cultural perspectives.
On the other side of the coin, negative misinformation can be spread just as quickly. The misleading data can reach just as many people as the valid data, and that can create some social confusion about certain events. The internet can also be home to a lot of inappropriate information, and even the youth of our planet can be exposed to it. With all the ads and popups, many young people may accidentally navigate into websites they shouldn't be exposed to. The bottom line is that the influence gained is up to the user's online activity. It is completely up to each individual how they want to utilize technology and social media.
